INSTAGRAM CO-FOUNDERS CREATED ARTIFACT, A NEW AI APP

Four years after Instagram's founders, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, left Instagram, they came back to the area of social media with a new AI social media called ARTIFACT. It is now available to join its waitlists for both Android and IOS app.

The word ARTIFACT is defined by Social Media Today as 'articles, facts, and artificial intelligence’. By using the AI technology, the app pushes what the readers like based on their in-app activities.

ARTIFACT was described by PlatFormer as 'TikTok for the text'. Its creator, Kevin Systrom, said it is 'a personalized news feed'. Similar to TikTok, the app automatically pushes news articles for users based on their searching and reading history. It also shows more articles from users you follow, their commentary on the posts , and direct messaging inboxes, suggested by Mashable.  It looks like the For You page in TikTok, but delivers information in the text format. Different from Twitter, it adds  AI pushes. Unlike Instagrams, it has more news in words instead of pictures. Its uniqueness among other social media might catch users' eyes.

Will it be as successful as TikTok?
Some commenters said that it will catch some cast-offs from twitter. It provides people news which is more relevant to their lives and interests, saving time for filtering useful information. Thus, it can be a source to keep people in date.

However, will the intelligent push works in the area of news? For short videos and pictures, people mostly read them for wandering entertainment. However, since there are more serious contents in news, its readers might not want to continue reading similar information and thoughts. Also, ARTIFACT uses AI to decide which contents and publishers should appear. It might be taken as a form of censorship, which is usually opposed by users.

After the success of TikTok, the publication of ARTIFACT again proves the growing popularity of AI in social media. Will AI be a key method for a social media's success? Or will more people feel uncomfortable under the growing surveillance? With both pros and cons, it is hard to tell the future of the new app.
